Theobald, count of Arles, was a Frank from the Bosonid-family. He was son of Hucbert and he married Bertha - an illegitimate daughter of Lothair II, King of Lotharingia - that was renowned for her beauty and spirit. They had two sons Hugh of Italy and Boso of Tuscany. Theobald died in 925.

      1. THEOTBALD [Thibaut] (-[Jun 887/895]). The Annales Vedastini record that "Teutbaldum filium Hucberti" was gravely wounded by "Heinricus" in the battle against "Bosonem tyrannum" in 880[119]. "Richardi comitis, Teutbaldi comitis, Bernardi comitis" subscribed the charter dated 25 Jul 879 under which "Boso…et coniunx mea Hirmingardi proles imperiales" donated property "in pago Laticense…in villa Lantinus" to the abbey of Montiérender[120]. Comte d'Arles.

'''m''' ([879/80]) as her first husband, BERTA of Lotharingia, illegitimate daughter of LOTHAIRE II King of Lotharingia & his mistress Waldrada --- ([863]-8 Mar 925, bur Lucca). "Hugo comes et marchio" names "patris mei Teutbaldi et matris meæ Berthe…" in a donation by charter dated 924[121]. "Berte" is also named as mother of "Hugo rex" in the latter's donation to Cluny for the souls of his parents dated 8 Mar 934[122]. Her parentage and first marriage are confirmed by the Annales Bertiniani which name "Hugonem Lotharii iunioris filium" and “sororium illius Theutbaldum” in 880[123]. Her origin and second marriage are confirmed by the epitaph of "Comitissæ…Bertha" which specifies that she was "uxor Adalberti Ducis Italiæ…regalis generi…filia Lotharii" and records her death in 925[124]. Liudprand provides the proof that Berta, who married Marchese Adalberto, was the widow of Theotbald when he names "Berta matre regis Hugonis", specifying that she was previously married to Adalberto, when recording her death[125]. She was regent of Tuscany after the death of her second husband in 915. She married secondly ([890/98]) Adalberto II Marchese of Tuscany. Theotbald & his wife had four children:

    • Rotbold II (also Rothbold, Rotbald, Rodbald, Robald(us), Roubaud, or Rotbaud; died 1008) was the Count of Provence from 968 to his death and margrave from 993. He was the elder of two sons of Boso II of Arles and Constance, the younger being William I, who took up the title of marchio in 979 and that of dux later. He ruled with William, probably jointly over the whole county. On William's death, Rotbold was left as head of the family with the title of marchio.

He first signed a charter of his father's in March 965. He signed his brother's donation to Saint-Victor de Marseilles in April 970 and to Cluny on 28 August 990. In 1005, he joined with his sister-in-law Adelaide of Anjou and his nephew William II to grant privilegse to Saint-Victor.

He married Emilde, possibly a daughter of Stephen, Viscount of Gévaudan. He left one son, Rotbold III, who inherited his titles, and a daughter, Gerberge.

      From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adalbert II (c. 875–915[1]), called the Rich, son and successor of Adalbert I of Tuscany, and grandson of Boniface II, was much concerned in the troubles of Lombardy, at a time when so many princes were contending for the wrecks of the Carolingian Empire.[2] Before his father died in 884 or 886, he is accredited the title of "count". He inherited from his father the titles of count and duke of Lucca and margrave of Tuscany.

Between 895 and 898, he married Bertha (c.863–8 March 925), the daughter of the Lothair II of Lotharingia and widow of the Count Theobald of Arles. Adalbert and Bertha had at least three children:

Guy, successor as count and duke of Lucca and margrave of Tuscany
Lambert, successor of his brother as count and duke of Lucca and margrave of Tuscany
Ermengard (died 29 February 932), married 915 Adalbert I of Ivrea
Adalbert II died on 10 or 15 September 915 and was buried in the cathedral of Lucca. His widow Bertha took over the regency for their young son Guy.

    • Turton does not have this generation. However it does fit with Ancestral Roots' statement that Emma de Provence was great granddaughter of Boso II, d. 965/7. Todd A Farmerie, who commented on this line, states that the existence of Rotbaud & his wife Emildis de Gevaudan is a theory of Vajay. Todd doesn't hold with the theory, preferring the more traditional solution, which matches Turton.
