    • Minister (preacher). In 1832 he received a certificate authorizing, himto 'officiate as an exhorter in the Methodist Episcopal Church' on thePulaski and Washingtonville, N. Y., stations. In 1837 he was 'setapart' for the office of Deacon in the M.E. Church, by Bishop Waugh, atHallowell, Maine. Held charges in Maine from about l839 to 1843, atAlfred, Hallowell and Kennebunkport. In a letter written about this timehe refers to the small salaries of $300 a year to preachers, adding:

    • Mr. Bragdon's health appears to have been far from robust and about themiddle of the year 1843 he decided to give up preaching for a time. 0nOctober 4th he, with his family, left New Gloucester for Carlisle,Pennsylvania. Leaving his wife and little ones with Professor and Mrs.Caldwell, he proceeded South, stopping at many places and preachingoccasionally.

    • About l846 he moved to Auburn, New York, where he was a partner in abookstore, sponsored but not supported by the M. E. Church. He preachedalmost every Sunday and for a time served as Presiding Elder inneighboring towns. It is inteteresting to note that he preached a numberof times to a colored congregation, He writes to Prof. Merritt Caldwellthat the latter's book "would have its friends and foes, but wouldeventually be a standard book."

    • In 1855 he was given a charge in the Rock River Conference at the town ofWaukegan, Illinois. He also had charges in Elgin and Evanston. On Sept.24, 1860, he writes to Mrs. Caldwell from Evanston: "All well but me"and adds that he will take work again soon in Rock River Conference, butthat he would like to return to New York State, although he could not doso at once because it would be difficult to dispose of his property toadvantage . A further consideration was that two of his children werestudents in Northwestern University.
